Group discussion boards are a major aspect of my interpersonal communications class this year, as they allow us to communicate with classmates online, without actually seeing them for a weekly class. The discussion boards are an aspect of our weekly assignment where we have to post a response to a prompt the teacher gave in an assigned chat room. We then have to respond to two posts made by the other classmates in our group, discussing what we noticed and liked as we read through their initial post. This weekly assignment uses a variety of 21st-century skills, but one that I would like to highlight is the communication aspect. Not only is the class about it, but it's teaching and helping us improve our communication through mediated sources. We need to be able to communicate clearly so that our group mates understand and respond clearly as well. It's been a bit of a challenge taking part in the boards because I have never actually met or seen the people I'm talking to. After all, the class doesn't do zoom meetings or anything. It instead operates remotely through the college's class site Laulima. It was kind of scary at first because I had no idea what was going to happen, or who I was talking to. Over time though, I got more comfortable from experience and observation of how others post and reply.
